Bath Bomb Recipe – Smelling lush and totally fizzy!
What are bath bombs made of and how do they fizz?
When the weather outside is frightful, soaking in a warm bath sounds good doesn’t it? Perhaps you got very muddy playing in a football game, or freezing cold playing out on your bike. Adding a bath bomb to the water can make your bath super fun!
But what exactly is in these scented bombs and what makes them so fizzy?
Well bath bombs are usually made from two main ingredients: baking soda and citric acid. Often, bath bombs also include dyes and perfumes and every so often they have epsom salt.
The fizziness from the bombs comes from the chemical reactions that happen whilst the baking soda and citric acid come into contact with water. Baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, has the chemical system NaHCO3. In water, baking soda quickly dissolves and the positively charged sodium (Na+) breaks apart from negatively charged bicarbonate (HCO3-). At the same time, the citric acid also dissolves with a single hydrogen ion (H+) seperating from the rest of that molecule.
That positively charged hydrogen from the citric acid and the negatively charged bicarbonate from the baking soda mingle together very very quickly and they produce a series of reactions. One of the end products is carbon dioxide (CO2). Because carbon dioxide (CO2) is a gas, it forms small bubbles in the bath water, creating a delightful and satisfying fizz!
If there are perfumes or scented oils within the bath bomb, they are released into the air with the carbon dioxide bubbles.
